A Ferrari Luce has sold for an astonishing $40 million at Monterey Car Week, setting a world record for a new car sold at auction. But does that extraordinary result genuinely prove Ferrari’s controversial first electric car is worth $40 million?
The Ferrari Luce “Chassis 0” was auctioned by RM Sotheby’s in Monterey, California, with all proceeds benefiting educational initiatives through the Ferrari Foundation. The winning bidder was billionaire inventor, car collector and philanthropist Dr Herbert “Herbie” Wertheim.
This was no ordinary showroom purchase. Chassis 0 is a unique Ferrari Tailor Made example, the buyer’s premium was waived, and the car is scheduled to return to Maranello before final delivery in the first quarter of 2027.
In this video, I look beyond the sensational headlines to examine:
• Why the Ferrari Luce reached $40 million
• Who bought Ferrari Luce Chassis 0
• Why a charity auction result is different from normal market value
• The Luce’s reported success in China
• Ferrari’s use of exclusivity and artificial scarcity
• Whether an electric Ferrari can preserve Maranello’s heritage
• What the sale really tells us about Ferrari’s first EV
The standard Ferrari Luce was launched at €550,000, approximately US$638,000, making this charity result more than 60 times its regular starting price. It may be a historic auction record, but does it validate the car, the technology and Ferrari’s electric direction?
Let me know in the comments: does this $40 million sale make the Ferrari Luce more desirable, or does the context completely change the headline?
