Scrapping Petrol Cars for EVs: Green Shortcut or Costly Mistake?
A new study reported by New Scientist claims it can be greener to scrap a functioning petrol car and immediately replace it with an electric vehicle. Its calculation is plausible: although EV production creates more upfront emissions, far lower energy use can repay that carbon debt within a few years, particularly for high-mileage drivers using clean electricity.
However, the headline outruns the evidence. The US model assumes the petrol car is destroyed, rather than sold, exported and driven elsewhere, and overlooks some consequences of mass replacement: accelerated mining, battery production, shipping, infrastructure demand and premature waste. Low-mileage cars, efficient hybrids, oversized EVs and coal-heavy grids can also reverse or sharply reduce the benefit.
A saner transition would prioritise heavily used, inefficient vehicles, taxis and existing commercial fleets, replace them with modestly sized EVs, clean up electricity and manufacturing, expand recycling, and let efficient low-mileage cars reach a sensible retirement point.
