Back with another Mario cover! This was one I did for the most recent Dwelling of Duels (just like my previous cover from the month before), where the theme this time was Spinoff Games. I thought Mario RPG would be a perfect game to choose a tune from since it's one of my favourite games from my childhood, and this piece in particular I always thought was really cool sounding, and made me think that it has so much potential for an arrangement. I also haven't done any music from this game since I did the Barrel Volcano one over two years ago -- hopefully I can do more! There are just so many games I want to cover music from though lol
I ended up yet again, turning a pretty short (in this case, 35-ish seconds) song into a relatively long musical journey. I made sure to have the ostinato going in some form throughout the entire length of it, and it has a bit of a hypnotic kind of repetition to it. I of course added a long, slowly developing solo section, and I really channeled my inner Alex Lifeson/John Petrucci for the volume swells. I'm really proud of the bass/drum groove during the solo section in particular. It just has this really spicy syncopated, but tasteful kind of feel, which is something I always appreciate about bass/drum parts in music I listen to, so I'm happy I was able to channel that into this arrangement. I also knew I wanted to have part of the song utilize my new 8-string guitar for some really low, heavy sections.
All in all, I'm very pleased with how this one turned out, especially considering I had to rush the DoD version a bit to meet the deadline. I did end up re-recording a couple lead guitar lines for this release since they weren't quite as perfect as I wanted them to be, and I updated the mix a bit based on feedback I got.

For this one, I decided to use my acoustic guitar (as well as another acoustic tuned with Nashville tuning for that pseudo-12 string effect) for a good chunk of it, but couldnt resist adding heavier guitars later on lol. I noticed that the original song reminded me a bit of Porcupine Tree, so I decided to try to further push the sound in that kind of direction (at least the not-as-heavy parts... the heavier parts ended up sounding a bit more like Dream Theater and Haken)
I also didnt use the green screen this time, since my laptop isnt good enough to edit those videos, but I am building a new desktop computer so the green scree will return after that :)

Ive been planning on doing this one for months! Im glad I finally got a chance to do it, and I also got my friends DisposedHeroVGM and Sumask to lend their talents for it, so special thanks to them for doing some excellent shredding on this one!
Ive had the idea for how I wanted to arrange this cover for a few months, so that part went by pretty quickly. The main part I knew I wanted to do for sure is the long ending part, that is really just the riff from the last section of the original song, but slowed down and transposed down from B minor to F# minor. I based that whole section on the end of a couple Dream Theater songs (namely The Dark Eternal Night and S2N) that have this sludgy riff going by with a keyboard solo on top. This one ended up being some keyboard and guitar, but I think I still pulled off that kind of vibe pretty well (with Sumasks help of course!)
This is the second video Ive done with my green screen, and Im still not entirely sure about whether I like it or not. Im definitely not super good at using it properly yet; theres some unavoidable artifacts in the video (mostly just small outlines and the very edges of my instruments disappearing a tiny bit), but its still very watchable. I also tried using my webcam for recording instead of my phone, although Ill probably go back to my phone because the quality is a bit better, and Ill probably have better results with the green screen now that I know how to film it better than the first time. Trying to edit myself into the rooms of my contributors who dont use green screens was also an interesting and fun challenge!
This is also the first video I made using my new computer! Its been amazing so far, with very few of the hiccups, lag, and general slowness of my previous laptop. I was actually able to watch the preview of my video in the video editor!
