Following Nazi Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941, the Soviet government launched an enormous mobilization effort to replace the catastrophic manpower losses suffered by the Red Army. One source of desperately needed soldiers was the Gulag prison system. Decrees issued in July and November 1941 authorized the early release of hundreds of thousands of prisoners, particularly those convicted of minor, nonpolitical offenses, with many military-age men subsequently transferred to military authorities for service in the Red Army.
