The Battle of Methven was fought shortly after Robert the Bruce was crowned King of Scots, on June 19, 1306. Bruce's army camped near Methven in Perthshire, believing it was protected by a temporary truce with the English commander, Aymer de Valence. Instead, de Valence launched a surprise nighttime attack that caught the Scots unprepared and routed Bruce's smaller force. Many of Bruce's supporters were killed or captured, forcing the newly crowned king to flee into hiding while several of his closest allies and family members were imprisoned or executed.
