The Battle of Drøbak Sound took place on April 9, 1940, during the opening hours of Operation Weserübung. As a German naval force advanced up the Oslofjord to capture Norway’s capital, the aging but well positioned coastal defenses at Oscarsborg Fortress, under the command of Colonel Birger Eriksen, opened fire without waiting for orders. The fortress’ guns and torpedo battery struck and sank the German cruiser Blücher, halting the advance. This unexpected resistance delayed the German capture of Oslo, allowing the Norwegian government and royal family to escape.
