At the outset of the Second War of Scottish Independence, King Edward III used the ceremonial dubbing of knights to inspire loyalty and martial spirit among his forces. Edward knighted a large number of young nobles and soldiers on the eve of the Battle of Halidon Hill. Hundreds were knighted in what became the largest mass knighting in English history.
The Crowning of Robert the Bruce took place on March 25, 1306, at Scone. After killing his rival John Comyn, Robert the Bruce moved quickly to claim the Scottish throne. Although the traditional Stone of Scone was in English hands, Bruce was crowned in a hastily arranged ceremony, reportedly with the crucial support of Isabella MacDuff, who performed the crowning in accordance with tradition. Despite the unconventional circumstances and immediate military setbacks that followed, the coronation legitimized Bruce’s claim and became a rallying point for Scottish resistance against English rule.
