The Black and Tans were British recruits brought into the Royal Irish Constabulary beginning in 1920 to reinforce the police during the Irish War of Independence. Mostly former British servicemen from World War I, they received their nickname from their improvised uniforms, which initially combined dark green RIC clothing with khaki British Army garments. Deployed against the Irish Republican Army, the Black and Tans became notorious for harsh reprisals against civilians and suspected republican sympathizers, including beatings, shootings, and the burning and destruction of homes and businesses. Their actions, alongside those of the separate Auxiliary Division, intensified hostility toward British rule and generated international criticism, while often strengthening popular support for Irish independence.
