Here is the Christmas special that got the internet talking a couple years ago, all because a single frame of it ended up in the background of someone's family Christmas photo.... and no one knew where that frame came from for a long time! It's the Soulmates! And their story today is "The Gift of Light!"
This obscure Canadian cartoon has already been uploaded here a couple times, but they either have quality issues (stretched to 16:9 widescreen, colors are a bit off, weird HD upscaling filters being used) or are just poor transfers. This is my attempt at providing the best quality transfer possible that can overcome most of the issues in previous uploads such as picture jitter.
Having said that, there is a bit of VHS static that I couldn't get completely rid of. As good as my VCR is at handling EP tapes, some tapes are just a bit too old or poor quality to completely eliminate all tracking issues, such as this. Questar Video used the EP mode for many of their releases, including this Christmas VHS set this was part of. And as VHS collectors know, commercially sold tapes recorded in EP mode never really track the best. I've had good experiences getting EP tapes to play nice with my current transfer VCR, and other times, not so much. I did do a full clean up of my VCR's tape path before transfer, and tested another EP tape beforehand. That tape played great, compared to this one.
If I ever come across a better quality tape of this in the future (such as the elusive Lucerne Media release) I'll delete this one and replace it with the updated transfer.
Still, I thought it'd be good to start off the month of December with a bit of Christmas cheer. Enjoy!
