Playing the postgame of Pokemon LeafGreen after school gave me such a fond reverence for Hoppip and the move Splash. I loved seeing something as silly and pointless as that, infinitely delighted by the goofiness but also wondering why a battle game would include such a thing. It doesn't seem like there's really a "reason" most of the time, at least in the strictly mechanical sense. It's just Game Freak erring on the side of whimsical nonsense for its own sake a lot of the time- and that's gotta be one of the most beautiful things about this series. But I did find a lot of satisfaction in discovering the egg move list for Splash and even further the tech with Z-Splash, Z-Hold Hands and Z-Celebrate. They figured out a way to have their cake and eat it too making the Z moves powerful stat boosts. This kind of thing is the coolest part about Pokemon and why the games remain cool in the Real way. Even cooler than Mudkip! This one's for all the Meloetta, Spoink, and Tsareena fans out there.
