Everyone says the farmers market is the obvious place to start. Low barrier to entry — show up with an easy-up, a table, and a cooler. But low barrier to entry is not the same as low cost.
Seven costs hiding in your first year: the ramp-up (Neil Robinson averaged $400 days for his first 15 weeks — against an $800 target, that's $6,000 in lost revenue nobody budgets for), physical setup ($300 to $2,000 depending on how much display matters — Jen at Sonaterra spent $500 on handmade crates and signage before her first market), your Saturday (a 4-hour market is a 9-hour day — 30 weeks × 9 hours at $30/hr = $8,100 in your time), unsold product (10% back every week on $600 days = $1,800 per season composted after all the labor), transportation, weather (Hermann Bruns describes hauling a full load to an outdoor market, rain kills traffic, and the whole week's work goes home), and the biggest one — opportunity cost.
Every Saturday behind a table is a Saturday not prospecting restaurants, not building an online store, not developing a second channel.
None of this means don't do a farmers market. For a lot of farms it's the right starting point. Just walk in with your eyes open.
