When you try to be everything to everyone, you become nothing to anyone. The farm selling "fresh local vegetables" to whoever walks by is invisible. The farm known for the best salad mix in the county, or the only source of specialty greens for high-end restaurants, is the one people seek out and pay more for.
After a decade of interviewing farmers, the pattern is consistent: the most profitable operations are almost never the most generic. Jill Duncan built her business around a specific customer on ⅛ acre. Michael Russo said "if it's not a leafy green or a root, I'm not growing it" and hit $2,100/week in year one selling to chefs who wanted exactly what he grew. The Broxons run a simple, focused berry and vegetable model. Curtis Stone cut 90 products down to 10 and made the same money on a fraction of the land.
Specialization feels like closing doors. It's actually opening the right one. When you know exactly who you serve, every decision gets easier — what to grow, where to sell, how to price, what to say. You stop competing on price against everyone and start being the obvious choice for someone.
Don't try to be the best. Lots of farms are good. Be the only — the obvious choice for a specific person with a specific need.
