Nine years of this business not dying has not made me less afraid it will. Survival didn't quiet the fear — and for a long time I couldn't figure out why.
The reason turned out to be almost mechanical. Fear doesn't update itself. It can't take in evidence on its own. Left alone, it keeps running on old data — for me, the early years when it really could have all gone away, the year the doubt got installed. Every year since, the business got better, the footing got more solid, the whole thing got harder to kill. And the fear doesn't know. Nobody ever sat it down and showed it what year it actually is.
So you feed it reality on a schedule. Once a quarter, sit down with the real picture — not your books, the truth on purpose. What you owe, what's in the bank, where the money comes from now and how many places, compared to back then. That's not bookkeeping. It's a scoreboard updating a threat. It's the only way fear ever gets new information.
And the goal isn't zero fear. A founder with no fear stops holding cash, stops keeping options on the shelf, stops doing the smart, boring, protective things. You don't kill the fear — you calibrate it. And you can't read the calibration from the inside; the internal gauge is broken for everyone. You read it from the outside: watch what the fear makes you do. Small, proportionate actions — it's working. Big swings to soothe the feeling — it's running you.
One question, any time the dread spikes: am I about to do something proportionate, or something big to feel better? Is the bad thing actually happening, or does it just feel like it might?
