Last episode I told you the fear of losing your business is aimed at the wrong target. This one's about what it should be aimed at — and the asset you already own that's more durable than any product you could launch.
Every business owner gets taught the same thing: diversify, add income streams, don't depend on one thing. But every new product line isn't just one more income stream. It's one more thing that can break and one less slice of attention watching each one. Five shallow things aren't safer than one deep one. That's fragility wearing a safety costume.
The thing that actually catches you is the asset nobody puts on a balance sheet. I learned it the hard way at Permaculture Voices, standing on stage while a speaker asked 500 people to donate because my conference was failing. They gave more than $10,000 in ten minutes. My parents were in that room. I thought it was proof I'd failed. It was actually proof I'd already built the only thing in business that lasts.
Three questions before you build the next thing: Does it use the audience I already have, or does it need a new one? Does it run on my existing systems, or does it need its own everything? If the main thing dropped hard next year, would this be ready to catch me?
