In 1961, a Swedish warship that sank on its maiden voyage after sailing only 1,400 yards, was raised from the bottom of Stockholm Harbor. That ship, the Vasa, was in remarkable condition, despite having been underwater for 333 years. On a recent visit to Stockholm, I visited the ship in the Vasa Museum. An unexpected treat was my guide, Ewa Ogren, who described having watched the ship emerge from its watery grave when she was a 12-year old girl.
