Machu Picchu may be the most recognizable archeological site in the world, made famous when National Geographic Magazine featured it on their cover in 1913. With such mystique surrounding the iconic Inca ruins, the potential for disappointment is high when finally viewing them in person, so it was with some trepidation I climbed out of the tour bus and walked into the park. But even heavy rain and fog could not mar the sight of these majestic Incan ruins, perched hundreds of feet above the sacred Urubamba river and nestled against majestic Wayna Picchu Peak, making it one of the most awe-inspiring historical sites in the world. Later that same day, after the fog and rain cleared and most tourists had scurried back to the train, I climbed back up Machu Picchu Peak for a second spectacular view, this time framed by blue skies and puffy clouds. Machu Picchu was every bit as impressive as I had hoped it would be.
