In the 1990s while manufacturers were transitioning to 3.5-inch sized hard disk drives for desktop PCs, Quantum (who was also manufacturing 3.5 drives) decided to try a more cost-effective method creating what came to be known as "Bigfoot".
Being a 5.25-inch drive while unusual for the time had distinct advantages over the trending 3.5 size. Primarily the aim was a lower price (thus more competitive) alternative utilizing fewer moving parts and lower data densities for the equivalent capacity 3.5-inch.
Four series of Bigfoot drives were made First was simply called "Bigfoot" followed by the "Bigfoot CY". Both series featured 3600RPM soindle speeds with capacities ranging from 1.2GB to 6.4GB. Afterwards came the "Bigfoot TX" and "Bigfoot TS" series models. These upped the spindle speed to 4000RPM and featured capacities from 4GB to 19.2GB.
The Bigfoot series of hard drives would become noteworthy for being the first in a number of areas. The 12GB Bigfoot TX was the first hard drive to attain a capacity in the double digits of gigabytes. They were also the first drives supporting Logical Block Addressing (LBA) and Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART).
