The Poul Light and The Poul Graveyard
Here’s a great piece of folklore that was shared to me by John Flynn of Campile in south west Wexford this morning. It’s a remote rural graveyard that I’d been wanting to visit for over 20 years as I’d often heard of a thing called The Poul Light which leaves the graveyard and goes to the house of someone who is going to die and hovers around the house, yard or haggard.
It differs from other ‘Strange Light’ folklore I’d know as the ball of light follows certain families, like the banshee, and once it has delivered its sad news, it returns back to the remote graveyard.
And the great thing about this clip is, John relates the classic story about the light but when I asked him - he tells me how he saw it himself when he was a chap. His account is great as it’s pure natural and love the bit with his mother and father telling him not to tell his siblings. Have a listen and especially if you are into accents as you hear that Waterford/South Kilkenny influence on the accent in this part of Wexford.
