The Banshee Returns is a compilation of stories taken from a much larger series of interviews conducted by Michael Fortune and Aileen Lambert in two Limerick schools in 2025.
The compilation was screened as part of the Bualadh Bos Children’s Festival, marking the 20th anniversary of the classic The Banshee Lives in the Handball Alley, which they recorded 20 years earlier.
First created in 2004–05 by artists and folklorists Aileen Lambert and Michael Fortune, the original film captivated audiences in Limerick and beyond with its blend of folklore, superstition and the vivid imaginations of local schoolchildren.
This new collection features new faces and voices, with some stories that are new and others that have been passed down through the years.
Most importantly, it captures children at their finest — talking about where they live, what they believe, and the stories that shape their understanding of the world around them. Full of character, spirit and good humour, the interviews offer a wonderful glimpse into the imagination and personality of a new generation of Limerick children.
