The history of naval aviation during the Cold War is marked by intense rivalries and the constant pursuit of technological supremacy. By the late 1980s, the United States Navy recognized that its aging A-6 Intruder fleet, a stalwart of the Vietnam era, was becoming highly vulnerable to increasingly dense Soviet radar networks. Watching the United States Air Force successfully develop stealth platforms like the F-117 Nighthawk, the B-2 bomber, and early prototypes of the F-22 Raptor, naval commanders grew deeply concerned about their diminishing role in strategic deep-strike missions. Driven by institutional jealousy and the urgent desire to maintain their percentage of the Pentagon budget, the Navy initiated the Advanced Tactical Aircraft program, which would eventually become the highly classified A-12 Avenger II.

To fund this ambitious endeavor, a massive 4.8 billion dollar fixed-price research and development contract was awarded in January 1988 to a joint team comprised of General Dynamics and McDonnell Douglas. However, the foundational structure of this agreement was inherently flawed. Research and development for unprecedented experimental aircraft cannot reliably be bound to a fixed price, as unforeseeable engineering challenges inevitably arise. To maintain the illusion of a fair and highly competitive bidding process, the Navy deliberately kept Northrop—the leading expert in flying wing technology—in the competition, despite Northrop never officially agreeing to the financial stipulations of the contract.

The resulting design was a radical, triangular flying wing internally dubbed the "Dorito". It was intended to penetrate Soviet airspace undetected, dropping payloads deep within enemy territory. Yet, the intense secrecy surrounding the project severely hindered its progress. Due to strict compartmentalization, the naval engineers and contractors were expressly forbidden from sharing vital stealth data with Air Force specialists who had already solved many of the composite laminate curing issues on the B-2 program. This isolation forced the A-12 team to run down expensive technical blind alleys, drastically inflating costs and pushing the schedule perilously behind. Presented with beautifully restored, upscaled, and colorized archival footage, this first chapter of our documentary chronicles the fragile beginnings of a warplane doomed by bureaucracy before it ever reached the flight deck.
