The trajectory of modern maritime combat shifted permanently during the first half of the twentieth century, transitioning from massive surface duels to absolute dominance in the skies overhead. This documentary explores the complete chronological evolution of the aircraft carrier, a vessel that served as a floating airfield, a battle command center, and a city of thousands of hardworking men. By 1910 and 1911, civilian pilot Eugene Ely completed the first successful takeoffs and landings from the platforms of naval cruisers, laying the groundwork for a structural revolution. Following World War I and early bombing experiments led by Billy Mitchell against captured targets, Congress authorized the reconstruction of the coal ship Jupiter into America's very first carrier: the USS Langley.
Nicknamed "The Covered Wagon," the Langley became a proving ground where future air admirals learned to fly without brakes or shoulder straps, facing dangerous landings where tailhooks routinely missed arresting wires. The fleet expanded rapidly during the late 1920s and 1930s with the addition of legendary hulls like the Lexington, Saratoga, Enterprise, Hornet, and Yorktown. Landmark wargames at the Panama Canal and a prophetic 1938 theoretical strike on Pearl Harbor proved that mobile air power could easily neutralize fixed land installations. When the real tragedy of December 7, 1941, arrived, none of America's seven carriers were at Pearl Harbor, leaving them as the primary shield against total devastation in the Pacific.
