The Cold War strategic landscape demanded an unprecedented leap in aviation technology: an intercontinental heavy bomber capable of penetrating Soviet airspace at three times the speed of sound. The vintage archival footage showcased in this documentary has been upscaled and restored, appearing in authentic colorized versions to preserve the reality of this monumental endeavor. Designed by North American Aviation as a successor to the subsonic Boeing B-52 Stratofortress, the XB-70 Valkyrie was conceived to cruise at 70,000 feet and Mach 3. To withstand the immense thermal friction generated at 2,000 miles per hour, engineers abandoned conventional aluminum construction in favor of a brazed stainless steel honeycomb airframe, utilizing circulating jet fuel as an internal heat sink.

The aircraft incorporated compression lift aerodynamics, utilizing a sharp delta planform and folding wingtips that rotated downward during supersonic flight to trap the nose shockwave underneath the fuselage. On September 21, 1964, Chief Test Pilot Al White and Air Force Colonel Joe Cotton took command of Air Vehicle Number 1 for its maiden flight from Palmdale to Edwards Air Force Base. Despite encountering landing gear retraction malfunctions and a locked brake that ignited a tire fire upon rollout, the initial trial proved the basic low-speed stability of the massive airframe. Subsequent envelope-expansion flights pushed the aircraft through the transonic regime, reaching Mach 1.1 and Mach 1.4 while logging vital data on structural flexing and aerodynamic flutter.

During the construction of Air Vehicle Number 2, North American engineers introduced a five-degree dihedral to the wings to enhance aerodynamic stability, using automated fusion welding techniques. However, as the aircraft achieved its design goal of Mach 3 on October 14, 1965, the strategic paradigm was rapidly shifting. The advent of Soviet surface-to-air missile systems and the rise of cost-effective Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles led Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara to cancel production plans, relegating the two aircraft to high-speed scientific research.
