In February 2021, the North County Transit District inaugurated their Siemens SC-44 Charger locomotives, for service on the Coaster. These initial five locomotives replaced the MK F40PHM-2C locomotives, of which were in service since the beginning in 1995. In addition to the locomotive replacement, NCTD has also implemented a “renewal” program on their railcars, with each getting a fresh coat of paint and some much needed maintenance.
Since this has occurred, the Coaster has not looked, or even sounded the same. Many railcars are wrapped with advertising, in some cases there are more wrapped coaches than regularly painted coaches. Cabcars have had most of their original mechanical bells replaced, in favor for the more “louder” E-Bells. As of publish date, two cabcars have been “refurbished”, of which are 2309 and 2310. Two additional cabcars, 2301 and 2302, are also in the "Phase 2" livery, however instead of being refurbished and repainted property, wraps have been applied to these cabcars, of which are peeling off. Most of the trains have been running with the SC-44 Chargers, however due to lack of maintenance and breakdowns, its a common sight to see the two remaining EMD F59PHI locomotives powering some trains.
In this video, you’ll see various Coaster trains from Downtown San Diego to Carlsbad, CA. It’s very strange to see this once proud railroad in this sorry state, but as is life, change will always happen.
