By 1970, Daiei Studios was falling apart, I know I’ve said that multiple times throughout this retrospective series but it’s actually for real now. Despite the inevitable bankruptcy ahead of them, they still pushed ahead with another Gamera film. Director Noriaki Yuasa had the idea after a shark attack off Japan’s coast and thought it would be interesting to pit Gamera against a monster inspired by the goblin shark. Screenwriter Niisan Takahashi came back to write the script and leaned into the growing concern over pollution. Zigra’s backstory tied directly into that theme: his planet had been ruined by toxic oceans, so now he comes to Earth looking for a new home. It lined up perfectly with the environmental mood in Japan at the time. Toho was already making Godzilla vs. Hedorah with the same kind of message, and Daiei even scheduled Gamera vs. Zigra to come out just a week before. The problem was Daiei didn’t have the money to back it up. The studio had been mismanaged for years, and by 1971 it was collapsing. Zigra’s budget was cut down to about ¥35 million or a little over $235,000 USD which was one of the lowest in the whole series. Scenes were delayed, rewritten, or canceled outright. Yuasa originally planned several elaborate underwater battles but had to scrap them. Meanwhile, Daiei was laying off hundreds of employees, selling off assets, and even firing Yuasa from his staff position. He only stayed on as a freelancer just to see the movie finished.
