Godzilla Island was a short-form Japanese Godzilla spinoff that aired from October 1997 to September 1998. It ran for 256 three-minute episodes aimed at kids and aired on weekday mornings. The show was produced by Toho and Tsuburaya Eizo, directed by Shun Mizutani, and written by Takahiko Masuda and Akio Nanki. Jiro Dan (from Ultraman) starred as the G-Guard Commander, joined by Maimi Okuwa as the alien Torema, Kaori Aso as Misato Jinguji, and Kaori Aizawa as the villain Zagres. The show existed to keep the Godzilla brand alive while Toho paused the film series after Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995) in order to make room for the 1998 Hollywood film. With almost no budget whatsoever, the series portrayed its monsters using off-the-shelf Bandai vinyl figures moved around on miniature sets. It was a cost-saving measure and a marketing tool since it essentially served two functions; as a kids show and a toy commercial in the same vein as Transformers or GI-Joe. Despite its limitations, Godzilla Island managed to include nearly every kaiju in the franchise’s history up to that point. Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, Anguirus, King Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla, Gigan, Hedorah, Destoroyah, and SpaceGodzilla all appeared, alongside new or repainted variants like Firefighter Jet Jaguar, Hyper Mecha-King Ghidorah, and Neo Hedorah. The crew even kit-bashed toys to invent originals like Gororin, Dororin, and a mini-Dogora.
