Hollywood used to film gunfights with real bullets, and James Cagney almost died because of it. See, in the early 1930s, studios hired actual sharpshooters to fire live rounds during scenes. First example: The Public Enemy. A World War I marksman used a real machine gun, firing bullets into the wall inches from Cagney’s head just to make the gunfight look real. Then came Taxi! and it got worse. A live round hit the window frame exactly where Cagney had been standing a second earlier. He walked off set and demanded the practice stop immediately. And that moment changed Hollywood. Cagney pushed for safer working conditions and helped create the Screen Actors Guild in 1933. Today we use blanks, CGI, and air-powered squibs…but back then, realism meant actual bullets flying past your face.
