Sometimes things just happening. At a recent bike and tool auction i discovered a lonely and tired looking Matrix #6 milling machine, most likely built in the 1950s by the Coventry Gauge and Tool Co. Size and design are rather semi-ideal, but it has a vertical head, BT/INT30 spindle tapers and x-axis feed which makes it interesting enough to think about. Never seen one of these, i suspect some sort of production machine. Google results are nil, age guessed by myself, mainly based on the motor design. The internal drive system consists of a long duplex and a short triplex roller chain with an oil pump for lubrication and a set of external change gears, the motor is 2-speed, 0.75hp, no belts (except for coolant pump).
It happened that i was the only bidder, therefore it ended on my trailer for rather little money.
Seems odd-ball machines just find me, my beloved Rigiva mill is a total Google fail, too . There are similar looking Riva/Rigiva mills, but not a single one of this particular model, (2-part base, y-axis box ways, 3-axis feed) .
In this episode we do a quick test run, then strip it down for
unloading and moving into the shop.
Next part will show unloading and move into the shop, then we'll start looking into the issues list which appears to get longer every time i touch it.
Initially, i just wanted to look at the motor bearings,....but there is more, lot's more to do.
