"In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon Daniel had a dream and visions of his head upon his bed: then he wrote the dream, and told the sum of the matters. Daniel spake and said, I saw in my vision by night, and, behold, the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea. And four great beasts came up from the sea, diverse one from another. The first was like a lion, and had eagle's wings: I beheld till the wings thereof were plucked, and it was lifted up from the earth, and made stand upon the feet as a man, and a man's heart was given to it" (Daniel 7:1-4).
Who are the four beasts of Daniel 7? Traditional theology suggests that the beasts represent a broad overview of history - Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece and Rome. While this may be entirely acceptable, there seems to be another view in mind as the angel gives Daniel the interpretation. The prophet is told that they represent four kings "... which shall arise." Since Belshazzar's kingdom had begun it's slide into decline and oblivion, the first beast could hardly represent Babylon. There is an alternative interpretation more suited to modern history.
