Why do we get sick withChronic Disease? Does It Really Have to Last Forever?

We're often taught that a chronic disease is something you get... and then simply learn to live with for the rest of your life.

But is that really the natural state of the human body?

My experience working with people with autoimmune and other chronic diseases over the past 20+ years has taught me that many chronic illnesses are driven by ongoing causes and triggers that can often be changed.

When I was diagnosed with lupus as a teenager, I was told it was chronic, progressive, and incurable. Over the years it worsened from arthritis and rashes to lupus nephritis, kidney failure, blood clots, and mini strokes. I accepted that I would need medications for the rest of my life. Then everything changed.

In 2005, I changed my nutrition to what is now known as the Goodbye Lupus Protocol. My symptoms resolved, my kidney function returned to normal, my lupus laboratory markers normalized, and more than 20 years later I remain lupus-free with no relapses.

My goal isn't to tell people to ignore medical care—I certainly didn't. The medical treatments I received helped save my life. But I also learned that we have to ask a bigger question:

**What is driving the disease in the first place, and what can we do to help the body repair?**

And yes, genetics plays a role. Especially when you look at how some people, like me, get sick so young, and others may not develop diseases until they are at midlife. Genetics is out of our control. But these other factors are IN our control, and they make a huge difference for most people.

For the past two decades, I've dedicated my career to helping people understand the nutritional and lifestyle factors that may contribute to chronic illness. And this has allowed what started as my own personal journey to help thousands of people around the world.
