In 2009, NASA was livestreaming a countdown to launch one of their most important Space Shuttles when someone noticed something on the side of the ship.
NASA zoomed in and found that a bat was barely clinging to the fuel tank. At first, NASA thought it would just fly away, but after some waiting, it didn’t move. So they called in a wildlife expert, who found that the bat had a broken wing and physically couldn’t fly away.
However, NASA decided to continue the mission anyway, risking the bat’s life.
The internet was outraged: why couldn’t NASA just rescue the bat before the launch?
But by then, it was too late. As the engines lit, the infrared cameras captured the bat’s final moments before the rocket was launched into space.
