The Legend of Dragoon
by: OmegaSion
The party continues to make their way through the Forbidden Lands of the Winglies to obtain the Dragon Block Staff.
From the Save Point we have two ways to choose from to get to the Dragon Block Staff. The Path on the left is a bit longer, however there are a few rewards, namely the Power Up reusable item and the Mind Crush sword for Dart.
The path going straight is the shortest, but it's guarded by a mini-boss you will have to get through. There's no chests to get either.
I'll be taking the left path for now, and later on going through the other to fight the mini-boss because more EXP never hurts, especially with a tough battle coming up soon.
After reaching the circular room with the teleporter in the center, make sure to equip those Spiritual Rings on your party before using it, because we'll be fighting the boss of the dungeon after.
As for the boss, get ready for a long, drawn-out fight. The Grand Jewel is like a combination of all the worst ideas to give an RPG boss rolled into one.
The main thing to worry about is never be transformed into your Dragoon forms for more than a single turn. If you are transformed for longer than a single turn the boss will use the Dragon Block Staff and reduce all your transformed characters stats to nothing and will allow the boss to one-shot them.
This is why I kept my SP levels low throughout the past few segments. If you use a Level 1 Dragoon transformation, you can get a quick hit in for added damage and be transformed back at the end of the turn without having to worry about getting hit by the staff.
That isn't the only annoying thing in this boss' arsenal. It will level drain you by 5 levels up to three times during the fight (I've never seen it do more than that). So not only do you have to deal with not being able to use your dragoon forms for more defense and attack, you are further weakened by having your levels reduced by up to 15 for most of the fight.
The last thing about this boss is it never uses a physical attack. All of it's attacks are magic based (which is why I suggested buying Spiritual Rings). Of those it will use mostly Wind, Earth, and Light element spells which can wreck Rose, Albert, and Kongol if you bring them (the latter two most of all).
So trudge through this battle as best you can, using your LV1 Dragoon Transformations to get in some extra damage. Keep your party's HP high and you will eventually come out the victor.
(I had a little mishap in the battle where I had an unexpected visitor pop in while I was doing a Dragoon Addition and missed it. This is why I only get two hits with one of Dart's attacks.)
Once the boss finally goes down, we get the Dragon Block Staff and can continue on, however I'll be making a trip back to take on the mini-boss battle of the dungeon to net some extra EXP. And with the Grand Gem out of the way we don't have to worry about keeping our SP Levels low anymore.
In the next segment we'll take care of the rest of the dungeon and return to Deningrad.
