The Kid Omni-Man Problem

Oliver Grayson without a doubt is the biggest waste within the series of Invincible. After watching season 3 and seeing how he plays off of Invincible, I started reading the comics and was thinking how Oliver would change and see what his role would be like. But during my first read, I was pretty disappointed with how Oliver was handled. He started off very strong, but I believe past the initial Viltrumite War stuff, Oliver kinda sucks. Let’s break down who Oliver was, what he represented, and how he kinda falls off through the second half of the story. Now Oliver Grayson, also known as Kid Omni Man, is well.. the kid of Omni man. Unlike Mark who’s Human and Viltrumite, Oliver is part viltrumite and part thraxxan, aka bug people. Omni Man was pretty much an example to show how Nolan started off fresh, which Mark of course was not happy about. He'd be conscious when Angstrom Levy would make his move, leading into him and his mom being threatened pretty badly. Luckily though Mark did what he had to, and ended Angstroms Levy’s life… or so he thought. After accidentally “killing” Angstrom, he’d be back to square one. He’d begin training again, along with even helping Oliver become his own superhero. However, Oliver is having a hard time understanding this concept, as shown when he fights the Maulers. After the Maulers dispose of the guardians, Invincible and Kid Omni Man team up. And while Mark deals with the big boy stuff, Oliver is left with the task of defeating and putting away the Maulers. Oliver being so young, he’s someone who's being pushed into the right direction, proving Omni Man wrogn to an extent. Oliver in his mind wasn't really going to amount to much, but even with the little bit of screen time we’re given with Oliver, it goes without saying he has some ridiculous potential. Even when Mark would fight off Conquest, the next best line of defense that could really support Mark was himself and Atom Eve. And we saw how that worked out for him…. BIG ASS BEAT DOWN COMING UP. The Mauler Twins is one thing, but people like Angstrom and Conquest can't be spared any longer. And so we end season 3 off with Oliver technically being right? It’s said that when Kirkman was cooking with Oliver, he wanted him to be kinda like Damian Wayne in a sense where he’d want the bad guys put down for good. Leading into him bouncing back and forth with Mark, who would be the Batman in this case, trying to make Oliver do better. And initially it does seem like he’s forming into his own hero and for the better. He’d see him get his glow up along with changing his name to Young Omni Man, get a new costume, and he’d grow fully into his earth life. We know similarly to Mark at the beginning he’s helping the world slowly but surely by taking down threats like The Elephant and even the Lizard league. Although Oliver is alot stronger, he’s still nowhere near that elite viltrumite tier. He’d get his head caved in by Conquest, bullied by Lucan and eventually would get bullied by Conquest again, leading into Mark then saving his life. He’d be on Allen’s side while Nolan and Mark are trying to not kill everyone, leading into Allen and Oliver both fighting Nolan, and then Mark himself. But when Thragg gets involved that’s when things begin to die down, and the viltrumites would settle into earth undetected. Now past this point in the story, Oliver doesn’t really get all that much to do and it kinda makes sense as you’re going through the Eve and Robot stuff at this point in time. We have Oliver’s ideology clashing with his brother and eventually his father who turned a new leaf. Then this leads into him inevitably fighting them, joining Allen, and just kinda existing until he’s needed to die? I do get the idea of Adult Oliver however and I do like him as he is the result of Nolan and Marks point of people changing. And it’s extra cooler that it’s Oliver who does this since from the jump he was already in a very conflicted headspace. The death was no more than a shock factor, and it didn’t make it better that the art style was a little dookie at this point. I think this part of the story does right by Allen & it definitely does right for Mark and the set up for him vs Thragg. I think Oliver within the next few seasons will definitely be some of people's favorite characters. Hell, even as of season 3 a lot of people seem to like him and understand that he’s definitely going to be a problem in the future. Which as we saw in the comics, that is exactly what ends up happening. But what I don’t like is after this, he just becomes a good guy with a clear moral compass? And it only leads into him being betrayed by the one guy he wasn’t clashing with ideally.
