Hiking off-trail in the rugged Superstition Wilderness is never easy. With steep, unstable terrain, cactus in every shape and size, rattlesnakes, and even the occasional concern about being murdered by a stranger, simply making it through a day in the Supes can feel like a victory. Today was no exception.
Join me and my new friend Marshal as we explore the north fork of Monument Canyon along the western edge of the Superstitions. Our route takes us up the canyon floor and eventually to the Superstition Ridgeline. On the way back down, we check out the “Ironing Board,” an easy-to-navigate ridgeline that extends below the infamous Flatiron.
Covering 10.2 miles with roughly 3,250 feet of elevation gain, we relied on a basic understanding of topography and route finding to guide the way. Believe it or not, we managed to find the path of least resistance the entire time.
