Before the airport, there was a highway. Before the highway, a railroad. Before the railroad, a canal, and before the canal...a thousand years of ethnic Mon habitation and a critical part of what would become today's Thailand.

This week, we're exploring the long and winding road that led to the construction of Suvarnabhumi International Airport, visiting the old sites, exploring rare and fascinating immigrant communities and eating everything we can, as we try to figure out just what's out there, in the fields and developments around the worlds 17th-busiest airport.
