Close your eyes, smell the sagebrush, and imagine what life might have been like 1,000 years ago when the Fremont people were using this rock overhang for protection from the weather. Swelter Shelter is located in Dinosaur National Monument in northeastern Utah. Excavations in the 1960s uncovered stacked layers of artifacts and noted that the rock imagery also appeared to have been applied in overlapping layers. Based on these observations, we can guess that the site was used over and over again by many generations of Native Americans.
