1947PartitionArchive | The forces shaping our understanding of Partition | Kavita Daiya - SSL Season 3 Episode 7 @1947PartitionArchive | Uploaded 2 years ago | Updated 2 hours ago
What forces shape our contemporary understanding of Partition? Dr. Kavita Daiya has spent the last two decades exploring forces such as colonial literature and Bollywood film among others, in shaping how we conceptualize and understand the past. Join us in a live discussion with Dr. Kavita Daiya on Season 3, Episode 7 of Sunday Stories Live hosted by Sonam Kalra.
In addition to numerous monographs and academic articles, Dr. Kavita Daiya has written two books, the first of which, Violent Belongings: Partition, Gender and National Culture in Colonial India (Philadelphia: Temple UP, [2008] 2011), focuses on the historical and contemporary narration of the 1947 Partition of India. It questions the impact of postcolonial/diasporic literature such as Bollywood film, along with personal testimonies and journal entries, which recorded the heart-wrenching stories of violence and migration during the Partition.
Her other book, Graphic Migrations: Precarity and Gender in India and the Diaspora is yet another masterpiece that is often defined as a bold intervention in South Asian Partition studies.
Kavita Daiya is Professor of English and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program at George Washington University (GWU). She is an Affiliated Faculty in the Sustainability Program, the Sigur Center for Asian Studies, and the Global Women’s Institute. She is the former Director of the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program at GWU (2018-2021). Prof. Daiya's research is poised at the intersection of Global Literature and Film Studies, Asian American Studies, and Feminist Theory. She has written articles on South Asian literature, Bollywood film, Asian American literature, South African literature, gender studies, and transnational cinema. She is the author of two books: Violent Belongings: Partition, Gender and National Culture in Colonial India (2008) and Graphic Migrations: Precarity and Gender in Postcolonial India and the Diaspora (Temple UP, 2020). Both books are published by New Delhi based Yoda Press as South Asia editions. She has also edited a collection of essays entitled Graphic Narratives from South Asia and South Asian America: Aesthetics and Politics (Routledge, 2019). Prof. Daiya's transnational and comparative scholarship dwells on the role of storytelling about migration and citizenship across media in the public sphere. Addressing diverse national contexts, from the United States, to South Africa and India, Daiya’s research is anchored in a sustained commitment to how gender, race, class, religion, and sexuality shape the cultural representation of migration, freedom, and belonging. She is currently working on her third book about South Asian American women’s writings, 1940-2020.

The discussion will be hosted by Sonam Kalra, a musician and composer.
