1947PartitionArchive | In search of heritage across borders with Amardeep Singh | Sunday Stories Live @1947PartitionArchive | Uploaded 3 years ago | Updated 2 hours ago
Nearly a decade ago, Amardeep Singh set out to retrace the steps of Guru Nanak’s epic travels across modern borders in Pakistan and Afghanistan, among other regions of South Asia and the middle east. At the core of his journey and success lay the human bonds formed across borders which enabled his discoveries, now shared with the world through his works. With his magnificent writing and unwavering love for photography he stands out as one of the most passionate authors, photographers, and voyagers in South Asia today. In today’s episode Singh will shed light upon his numerous crossborder adventures in Asia, the logistics of working across sealed borders and his ideology behind his books and travel documentaries.
Join us in a live discussion with Mr. Amardeep Singh on Season 3, Episode 3 of Sunday Stories Live hosted by Parul Srivastava.
Amardeep Singh is a Singaporean-based self-taught photographer, accomplished author, and history enthusiast, who is on a journey to study the impact of Guru Nanak all across the world. He is well known for his legendary books, 'Lost Heritage: The Sikh Legacy in Pakistan’ and ‘The Quest Continues: Lost Heritage, The Sikh Legacy in Pakistan’, which unwinds the historical roots of Nanak on both sides of the border.
Singh also shot for a documentary in Afghanistan, tracing the legacy of love and brotherhood of Guru Nanak’s footprints across nine countries. In doing so he challenged unscripted events on a daily basis. Amardeep also charted out his own course by making human bonds which alone could pave his way ahead. A vast geographical area where Nanak preached his messages is now a conflict zone.
He attempts to document the impact of Nanak’s words five centuries later; to record the remnants of syncretic culture lost to the melee of the Partition and other geopolitical developments. His work is neither political nor academic. He narrates tales of people and places that survived the storms of hatred and destruction to still blossom with love and brotherhood.
Amardeep Singh was educated at The Doon School in India, later studying Electronics Engineering at the Manipal Institute of Technology and a Masters in Business Administration at the University of Chicago, USA. He now lives in Singapore. Having worked in the Financial Services sector for 25 years, he has dedicated himself to visual ethnographic research. He has authored two books, entitled, ‘Lost Heritage: The Sikh Legacy in Pakistan’ and ‘The Quest Continues: Lost Heritage, The Sikh Legacy in Pakistan’. Since end-2018, he is engaged in the making of a multi-episode docuseries, “Allegory: A Tapestry of Guru Nanak’s Travels”, which has been researched and filmed across 9 nations and is scheduled to be released in October 2021.
The discussion will be hosted by Parul Srivastava, a former Story Scholar with The 1947 Partition Archive and presently a Fullbright Scholar and doctoral student of history studying at University of Massachusetts in Amherst and University of Hyderabad in India.
