Last week I visited the home of Marie Claire Stacey on the grounds of Dooks Golf Club, Glenbeigh, Co. Kerry. Marie Claire’s home is the actual old wooden Cable Building that sent the 1st successful signal from Foilhommerum Bay in Valentia to Hearts Content in Newfoundland July 1866. In 1920 the old wooden Cable Building was brought from the island to Dooks, on the mainland, where it was made into a family home. Marie Claire took me on a tour of the building today and here she is standing on the spot in the wooden house when the first signal was sent from.

This recording was created as part of a wider Oral History and Research Project conducted by Michael for a project entitled 'Stories around the Cable'. The project was undertaken by Michael with the support of Creative Ireland, the National Monuments Service and Kerry County Council.
The series of video interviews aims to highlight various local stories and preserve the voices and histories of the people who are connected to the island and its past. Thanks to everyone involved in helping share these histories and stories.
