The Legend of Loch na Péiste
Here is recording I made back in Jan 2020 of Eddie Warren from Gurteen, Templeshanbo, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford talking a legend of a serpent or eel that tormented the people of Gurteen centuries ago. The very eel/serpent was eventually caught after he swallowed a man, who using a knife cut himself free from inside it's body.
As a result the monster disappeared while in recent decades the water in which he/she lived also disappeared when the small loch was drained. The story is very old as folklorist Patrick Kennedy, who grew up nearby, recorded it in the 19th century while the loch itslef was mapped on 1830’s OS maps and called ‘Lough Napasty’. Eddie got this story from his father growing up and his family have been living in Gurteen for the past 400 years and as a result they are known as 'Warren’s of the Eel Hole’.
