Frank Sidebottom was the iconic comic alter ego of English musician and comedian Chris Sievey, known for his distinctive, oversized papier-mâché head (later fiberglass). Emerging in 1984, the character was portrayed as an aspiring 35-year-old pop star who still lived with his mother in Timperley, Greater Manchester.
He originally made the large papier-mâché head as a promotional gimmick for a video game he designed. Instead, the character became a cult sensation.
Sievey tragically passed away from lung cancer in June 2010 at the age of 54. Frank had made his final public appearance just 10 days before at The Salutation in Manchester. Because he died in relative poverty, devoted fans fundraised to provide him a proper funeral.
In 2013, a life-sized bronze statue of Frank Sidebottom was unveiled by fans in his beloved home village of Timperley.
