The Duomo di Milano (Milan Cathedral) is a breathtaking masterpiece of Gothic architecture and the undisputed symbol of Milan. Located in the heart of the city, this massive, marble-clad cathedral is one of the largest Catholic churches in the world.
It is renowned for its forest of 135 spires and thousands of statues (over 3,400 in total), creating a "lace-like" appearance in pink-hued white Candoglia marble.
At the highest point (108.5 meters) stands the glistening golden statue of the Virgin Mary, known as the Madonnina. For centuries, it was the highest point in Milan; even today, out of respect for tradition, a replica is placed atop any new building that exceeds her height.
Construction began in 1386 under Duke Gian Galeazzo Visconti and Archbishop Antonio da Saluzzo. The project was so vast that it spanned nearly six centuries, officially reaching completion only in the 1960s.

The Devil’s Dream: A local legend claims that Gian Galeazzo Visconti decided to build the church after the Devil appeared in his dream, threatening to take his soul if he did not construct a grand cathedral filled with diabolical images. This is sometimes cited as the reason for the cathedral's unusually high number of gargoyles and "monstrous" sculptures.
The Ghost of Carlina: It is said that the cathedral is haunted by a young bride named Carlina. According to the legend, she jumped to her death from the roof of the Duomo out of guilt for her betrayal—or, as some versions claim, she simply vanished into the mist of the terraces and was never seen again.
