If you’re looking for a sure fire way to spot who the leader is in your department, there’s one way to do it, and that is to look for the person everybody runs to when they need leadership, when they need advice on a situation, when there’s a crisis going on, when there’s an emergency. Who is it that the employees in the department run to? Do they run to the person that’s in the corner office that has the title? Do they run to a particular supervisor over other supervisors? Or do they run to a person that’s at the line level that might just have all the answers? That’s where you look for leadership. Because those are the people that have already demonstrated the ability to serve the others that are around them. They’re the ones that people go to for leadership when they need it most, when they don’t have time to think about what the pecking order is and what they should do. When they need an answer, where do they run? That’s who they run to.
Now the other common answer to this is that you look for people that step up to a challenge and you certainly want your leaders to step up to a challenge, but that can often be about marking territory. That can also be about personal glory. There be a lot that’s behind that from a selfish perspective in stepping up to a challenge. Yes, you’d like to see that demonstrated in both categories but that’s where looking for those who rise to a challenge is sometimes what begets selfish leadership down the road.
So if you’re looking for the leader, if you’re a boss who’s looking for the next person to promote into a position, if you are a peer who’s kind of looking to see where in the pecking order you are as far as the next promotion is, when people need something, when people need leadership, where do they run? And whoever they run to is the one that’s going to be the leader.
Thanks. Have a good one.
