Those who enjoyed the PBS/BBC television series, "The Durrells in Corfu", with its staggeringly beautiful backdrop, may well be interested in learning more about them.
Other than the timeless "My Family and Other Animals" - the uproarious tome that started it all and has never gone out of print - enter two resoundingly fine biographies: "Gerald Durrell" by Douglas Botting, and "Lawrence Durrell" by Ian MacNiven. Sporting well over 600 pages apiece, these books remain the standards by which all lesser attempts are measured.
They are, of course, quite different: the one as funny as the other is serious. But roots will out; and to observe the lives of these fascinating men, with five marriages between them and a riotous range of ups and downs, is to appreciate their similarities, to say nothing of the indulgent sufferings of their mother, all the more.
