Out of the mouths of babes...
The famous "Yorkshire Vet", James Herriot, who was lionised in a hugely successful PBS series, based on his book, "All Creatures Great and Small", and various sequels, left some mighty big shoes to fill. But filled they have been - improbably, by a benevolent, humorous and wildly popular Yorkshire school inspector, named Gervase Phinn, whose hilarious encounters with small children, bemused teachers and tiny country schools during his peregrinations have been immortalised in a series of very funny (and very successful) books.
One of these is the memorable A Wayne in a Manger, in which our hero records some highly amusing, improvised performances of Nativity plays that bear little resemblance to the original, but are all the funnier for it.
A Christmasy classic. Sheer delight from start to finish - and a brilliant stocking-stuffer.
