David Becks obsession with Dodos began around 1976 after seeing a display at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Since dodos suffered extinction in 1681 and no complete specimens survived, the presentation was only an imaginative composite. He was so enchanted of the dodos that he started to create his own romantic version of these mysterious creatures and drew, painted, and sculpted numerous versions of the flightless, "disastrously trusting bird" that has become a symbol of extinction.

David Beck is a master sculptor, carver, and miniature architect. His delightful mixed-media constructions blend sophistication with the unexpected. He is a largely undiscovered genius who is unknown to the larger public, only a selected group of collectors and curators are familiar with his work. He works in a fantastical genre all his own, combines modern, popular, and classical influences, and manages to create intricate worlds with detailed, often humorous scenes that are rendered on a tiny scale.
