In Zanzibar they play it at the end of weddings, in Romania at the end of funerals, in Mexico as a protest song, and in Germany as a sailor’s lament. Written a century and a half ago by Sebastián Iradier and first performed in Cuba, “La Paloma”—the most frequently played song in the world—has circled the globe like a dove to touch listeners’ hearts with longing. La Paloma is recognizable by its song's rhythm, which defines the style of the habanera, a popular music genre in the 19th century. But Jazz artists, opera singers, pop stars, and others raced to perform the song--even Elvis Presley, Bill Haley, Frankie Laine or Harry Belafonte. Drawing upon insightful expert commentary, moving personal anecdotes, and snippets from dozens of versions of “La Paloma,” this program follows the song’s trail in an effort to understand its power to enchant so very many people. A mix of music history and ethnomusicology to tells the story of this popular song, which through the history has carried divergent messages and signification. Music thus has the ability to cross ages and borders, and to resonate differently in different cultures.

Tourists, partygoers and its residents are charmed by Jaffa’s oriental style and romantic authenticity, but beneath the shiny surface lurk racism, greed and injustice.
After many years of deliberate criminal neglect, Jaffa has been rediscovered as a coveted investment opportunity. The film follows the personal struggle of the veteran residents against the threat of eviction orders and reveals the metamorphosis that the city is going through, uncovering both its social and political meanings.

Simultaneously, governmental institutions are carrying out brutal evictions while the profits are exclusively enjoyed by the developers and the state.
A Guide to Gentrification shows all the fans of Jaffa the price its residents have to pay for beauty and location.

Driven by women, ego, and money, De la Parra celebrates film and life in abundance while producing and directing dozens of films, changing the entire Dutch film industry.
Born and raised in tropical Suriname, Pim de la Parra came to the Netherlands in the 1960s to make movies in a country that had no film industry. His first project, cowritten with a young Martin Scorsese and with contributions from Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct) was a critical success, but the influential filmmaker’s career became a rollercoaster of failure and acclaim. Eccentric and inspiring the filmmaker became famous in the Netherlands during the 1960s. It was the glamorous side of the film industry that had attracted de la Parra, but it was also a way to escape Suriname. Pim de la Parra's film studio Scorpio produced box office hits with "Obsessions" and "Blue Movie", grossing millions and bringing Dutch cinema international acclaim for the first time. The Netherlands was now on the film industry map. However fame didn't last. In fact, de la Parra's artistic personality made him difficult to work with; he lost his friend and business partner after "One People" bankrupted their studio. Bankruptcy and failure lead him to find refuge in spirituality, which has helped him to accept his life situation. He continued making low budget films even though they are poorly received by Dutch critics. He returned Suriname, where he lives an anonymous life away from all excesses. It is only later that he finally gets the recognition he deserves for his influential career and his contribution to the establishment of Dutch cinema. In this documentary, fellow filmmaker In-Soo Radstake follows de la Parra to create an engaging chronicle of his life and work, with revealing input from ex-wives, friends, and industry colleagues. De la Parra is playful yet agitated, enthusiastic and world-weary both as he discusses his controversial early films, his motivations, and his setbacks.

Taking it's influences from, Paris, New york as well as local sources, the hip hop movement has shaped the political history of Senegal. Music in Senegal is rooted in the daily life and political upheavals of the country. Elliot Erwitt explains how the photo of Nixon and Khrushchev, in a vitriolic conversation among the pavilions of a trade show, became the symbol of the Cold War. Elliot Erwitt, one of the most famous photographers, is best known for his emotional photographs. Influenced by Cartier-Bresson, Erwitt looks for the marvelous in normality, his photos manage to create iconic works from the banality of everyday life. His photos are also recognizable by their great sarcasm and irony. For him the secret of a good photo is luck, which is extremely important for any photographer. In 1953 he joined Magnum Photos as a press photographer. Long before these photos full of playfulness and insolence, Erwitt was a great photographer documenting the conflicts of his time, including the Cold War. One of his photos for the American press made history by covering the military parade celebrating the anniversary of the October Revolution in the Soviet Union. He showed the western bloc the technological advance of the Soviets with the parade of missiles. Richard Nixon and Nikita Chruschtschow. But Erwitt will make history again with his photos of the Kitchen Debate between Richard Nixon and Nikita Chruschtschow, depicting the surprising confrontation of the Western and Eastern bloc. Erwitt is also known for his portraits of famous people, such as Marilyn Monroe, whom he photographed during private sessions, but also Jacky Kennedy at the funeral of John Fitzgerald Kennedy. One of his most tragic photos is precisely Jacky Kennedy all in black and most disarming face in front of her husband's coffin. Erwitt also discovered a passion for wildlife photography, particularly canine photography. His most amusing photos are precisely those of dogs, including the very elegant ones in Central Park. He finds dogs quite sympathetic and uncomplicated and they don't mind to be photographied, which is a good reason to photograph them

German photographer Thomas Hoepker, reveals the story behind one of the most iconic pictures in the history of sports: the portrait of boxing legend Muhammad Ali. Thomas Hoepker was born in Germany, where he moved around a lot during his childhood, the family following his father, journalist. he discovered his passion for art and especially for photography when his grandfather gave him his first camera. he later studied art history and became a journalist. His photos document the hustle and bustle of his time, the 60s and 70s. A proponent of honest photojournalism, he photographed the major events and personalities of the international scene such as Andy Warhol. His style is recognizable at first glance, with bright colors and rich tones. As a journalist, he applies himself to photographing and capturing everyday situations. His departure for the United States in the 1960s was a journey of discovery and exploration for him where he shaped his photographic style. And it was also the starting point of one of his greatest encounters, that with The Greatest, Muhammad Ali. Right away, Ali attracts his attention, he finds behind the champion's stature an interesting and a bit strange man. Ali, then Olympic gold medalist and world champion, is the center of attention in America. He captured also intimate moment such as the blossoming of his love for his future third wife, Bellinda, waitress at a bakery store at the time. After his report on Ali, Thomas Hoepker continued his exploration of American society, through images of routine daily life, photos resembling Edward Hopper's paintings with those faces full of solitude.

Fascinated by the still image since his first encounter with cinema as a child, Guy Le Querrec taught himself photography before becoming one of the most recognized photographers of his generation. Fascinated by Africa, where he first worked for the newspaper "La Jeune Afrique", Le Querrec formed his style. He photographed remote tribes. He describes himself as an image fisherman "Pêcheur d'image", he tats the ground, not knowing what he will find, he discovers on the spot what can attract his curiosity. For him, photography prevents us from forgetting, it has the power to remind us of a moment, a memory, like Proust's madeleine. One of his most beautiful encounters was with the great jazz musician Miles Davis, whom he photographed on multiple occasions, such as during the Marciac Jazz Festival in the south of France. His photos reflect the huge charisma of the legendary trumpeter, the black and white of his photos intensifies the aristocratic and royal figure of the Prince of Darkness. At the end of the 60's, Miles Davis was the leader of modern jazz. He experimented and marked a new turning point in his career by inserting electronic modulation into his music. The celebrity of Miles Davis in the 60's equals that of the rock stars. In his recent work, Le Querrec is interested in Brittany's landscapes and culture, in people in their daily lives.

Steve McCurry tells of 9/11, as he watched it through the lens of his camera, taking pictures from the roof of his house in Washington Square. His reportage is the incredible testimony of the terrible moments after the fall. Becoming a member of Magnum Photos Agency in 1986, Steve McCurry has covered the many armed conflicts, the Afghan Civil War, the Cambodian Civil War, the Gulf War among others. His entire works documents the effects of globalization and the fate of mankind. His photos are recognizable at first glance, with his works of a striking color due to a low contrast, giving his photos a lot of emotions. This is precisely the case with his most famous photo, the Afghan girl, whose eyes captivate by their brilliance. A mysterious figure, she is the Mona Lisa of photography. A face that no one can forget. He takes many risk throughout his career to inform the world of the most tragic events, but most of all to show the similarity between people, the human connection between all of us. However the event that marked him the most was 9/11, his city and especially the Wolrd Trade Center, symbol of New York, were hit. Present in New York when the Twin Towers were destroyed, Steve McCurry photographed the September 11 attacks. His photos show the extent of the disaster, the enormous site of destruction, the people agard and those looking for survivors. For him, photography is a way to freeze time and history in the making. The photos burn in the memory, attesting to a moment marked forever in the minds. He is a frequent contributor to National Geographic.

The attack to the American Embassy in Tehran is the key event of the Iranian Revolution in 1979. The photo of Abbas synthesizes contradictions and hopes of Iranian people. Abbas described himself as a photographer of the outside, he became never the other, he took photos, then he left. A born photographer, he had a remarquable ability to capture mankind and its contradiction. His work focuses on faith and fanaticism, particularly in Islam and Buddhism. But Abbas' most famous photographs come from the Iranian Revolution in 1979. He covered the tumultuous events in his country. He knew there was something in the air, because there was too much tension and too much progress, so he wanted to do some in-depth work on Iran. He captured the hostage crisis in Iran with the 1979 takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. Abbas observed the dynamics of his country, recounting every detail with a critical eye, as he did in South Africa to cover apartheid and the Vietnam War in the Vietcong, where few photojournalists covered the events. In retrospect, he decrisbed himself as a historian of the present and was his mission to show these pictures now to the world. They give a unique and intimate view of the style, methods and thoughts of the artist. Cartier-Bresson himself, founder of the Magnum Photo agency, was strongly opposing the disclosure of his contact sheets and yet the choice of that picture is the point of contact between the photographer's life, thoughts, philosophy and the subject he portrays. What is the story behind the most famous iconic photos from around the world? A unique and fascinating journey into the forbidden city of the contact sheets of the world renowned photographers from Magnum, the legendary agency founded in 1947.
A lonely man facing Chinese tanks on Tiananmen Square is often described as the most famous photo of the 20th century. Stuart Franklin led us to the 5th of June 1989, when the unknown rioter faced the regime. Joining Magnum Photos in 1985, Stuart Franklin became a full member in 1989. In the same year, Franklin photographed the uprising in Tiananmen Square and shot one of the Tank Man photographs, first published in TIME Magazine, as well as widely documenting the uprising in Beijing earning him a World Press Photo Award. In fact, joining Magnum Photo was an obvious choice for Franklin, because of the photographer's right to ownership of his work, but also because of the critical spirit at the center of the famous photo agency's editorial line. The Magnum photographer studied at Oxford at the Faculty of Photography. During the interview, Franklin explains us how he photographied this famous and tragic photography of this courageous man facing the tanks, symbol of the violent repression of the Chinese government. After covering the Tiananmen Square protests, Stuart Franklin has continued to catch the conflicts of the world, like the famine, war or ecological issue. His work shows his ethic, and personal vision, which pushes him to have a better theoretical understanding of global issues. For him phtography is way to grasp a reality, a given moment and to question it. In this sense, his recent work focuses on the environment and climate change. Through landscape photographs, Franklin questions mankind and his ability to determine the future of the planet. His work has been published by numerous global publications including National Geographic, The Guardian, The Sunday Times and Harper’s Magazine.
#China #photography #historyKaren Armstrong – Religious historian who advocates compassion | Thinking Existenz (9/10)wocomoCULTURE2023-01-31 | A highbrow series on philosophy, politics and society. Ten personalities from diverse social and geographical backgrounds reflect on the world and its future. A portrait in multiple voices of contemporary reality, revealing the deep connections that exist between our mental models and the consequences thereof in our present day - for the individual, for life and for the planet.
Karen Armstrong is the UK religious historian and author of A 'History of God', where she states that there is one common trait in all forms of spirituality: compassion. She is born in 1944 in Wildemoore, England. Among many other books she is the author of A History of God, in which she presents a comparative study of the three monotheistic religions. Karen Armstrong states that we can find one common trait in all forms of spirituality: compassion. She describes how compassion is the core principle in all world religions, in the form of the golden rule. According to the English writer, suffering is something we all share, at the very least because of our common mortal condition, which, by itself, should be enough to enable us to understand the pain of others. Today, more than ever, the world needs compassion and putting ourselves in the other’s place has become an ethical imperative. However, it is not enough to believe in this “golden rule”: we need to apply it, and find creative ways of making an ethic of compassion possible. She encourages realistic ways to make compassion a powerful dynamic, to make it a golden rule that must be followed. According to Karen Arstromg, this is an important issue in our modern society. As a historian, she emphasizes the importance of history, of remembering the past. In any case, history must not be forgotten

Martin Jacques is the UK author 'When China Rules the World' and former editor of the journal 'Marxism Today'. According to Martin Jacques, the fact that China will overtake the North-American economy already in 2018, and not in 2025 as predicted a few years ago, will have a strong impact on the world as we know it. For the author of When China Rules the World, the rise of economies such as China and India, that together represent 38 percent of the world population, constitutes the biggest act of democratization of the modern world. The rise of China gives birth to a new social and economic reality. The United-States is finding it far more difficult to isolate China than it anticipated. The world is very different from what it was during the Cold War when it was divided into two sealed blocs.

Suad Amiry is a Palestinian author and director of the Riwaq Centre for Architectural Conservation. She is born in 1951 in Damascus, Syria and educated in Architecture at the universities of Beirut and Michigan. Between 1991 and 1993 she was a member of the Palestinian peace delegation in Washington. She is the director of the Centre for the Conservation of Palestinian Architectural Heritage and the author of several books. Suad Amiry became a writer by accident, but by nature she is a true story teller. She tells us about the human side of the occupation, the daily life of Palestinians that live under the scrutiny and control of the state of Israel. To be able to write, all that is needed is to have a story to tell, and Amiry tells us the story of millions of people that one day found their lives usurped, while she reflects on the conflict existing in the region—a conflict that is essentially about territorial control. A conflict that irremediably divides two peoples forced to become neighbours by our recent collective history. She revives the history and culture of the Palestinians through the story of her family. Her books evoke memories of Palestine while lighting the way forward.

Braden Allenby is a writer and American professor of Law and Civil and Enviromental Engineering. Born in 1950 in Illinois. Professor of Law and Civil and Environmental Engineering at Arizona State University; director and founder of the Center for Earth Systems Engineering and Management and founding member of the Consortium for Emerging Technologies. Co-author of the book The Techno-Human Condition, Braden Allenby introduces us to today's world in all its complexity, revealing the discreet yet powerful connections that exist between the human, natural and technological systems. We currently live integrated in the systems we created, technological objects have become an extension of our body, our personality and our cognition. Technology is the physical side of the human project according to Braden Allenby. Humans are not part of the technology, in contrary technologies becomes part of us, it becomes an extension of our own personality. To look at technologies it's to look at human condition, with all its flaws and its failures. We inhabit a world ever more dominated by human systems that operate at various levels and are imbricated in the life of individuals and of the planet. This condition has important ethical implications, because stopping is no longer an option for us. Navigating in plain sight in a world with an unfinished design, adapting ourselves to the system as it evolves, will be our non-remediable condition from now on. For Allenby, the future is uncertain, different, more difficult, but fascinating.

Nobel prize-winning economist Esther Duflo is the French professor of Economics at MIT and founder of 'Poverty Action Lab'. She is a regular contributor to the weekly newspaper Libération. Motivated by the responsibility that came with having been born in the Parisian upper class, Esther Duflo chose to be an economist, reconciling research and action. She seeks to understand the economic lives of the poor. Starting with the interrogation on what constitutes poverty, she tells us about the way reality is materialized by politicians. According to Duflo, many of the development policies, where the issue of poverty is the central object, are largely ineffective, because they stem from wrong assumptions about poverty and about the poor. A trap that Duflo calls the “triple i”: ideology, ignorance, and inertia. Duflo deconstructs some of the stereotypes about poverty and reveals to us the way the cycles of poverty work: in other words why, the poorer the people, the higher the probability that they will stay poor. Her work is thus commited towards finding solutions to end poverty and improve the welfare of the poor.

A portrait in multiple voices of contemporary reality, revealing the deep connections that exist between our mental models and the consequences thereof in our present day - for the individual, for life and for the planet.
Pioneer of electronic music, icon of the New York avant-garde, Laurie Anderson is a musician, composer, performer, visual artist and filmmaker. In the 80s and 90s she was a precursor of contemporary electronic music. In 2010 she released the album Homeland. In Laurie Anderson’s words, technology is a mere tool—like the pencil—to design the world, allowing us to assess our capacity as acting individuals. She believes that each person has the power to shape things and their own destiny. This reality creates conflicting conditions: on the one hand, we are capable of determining our own existence; on the other, we are constantly limited by the way we design the world and life. This design is no doubt conditioned by external factors and obeys categories that have us think the world in a closed manner. Thus we become ignorant, creating a language and culture that don't allow us to ponder realities beyond those that we find within the perimeter in which we move—like poverty or war. She felt the changeover to the digital age coming and continues to question our relationship to technology. Her counter-culture art highlights social inequalities and societal problems in America, as well as alienating capitalism.

Vandana Shiva is one of the world's leading ecofeminists and an Indian physicist combining the struggle for human rights with the protection of the enviroment. She obtained a PhD in Physics at the university of Ontario in Canada with the thesis “Hidden variables and locality in quantum theory.” Shiva combines Quantum Physics with social activism to peacefully resist a system that she considers has colonized the Earth, life, and the spirit. She recounts how she started defending the forest, the seeds, and the local ways of life and production, against the registration and control of patents claimed by multinational corporations like Monsanto. Our civilization, to survive, will have to review its model of understanding and interacting with the world, taking as an example the holistic knowledge of the Chinese and Indian civilizations that, according to Shiva, survived history essentially because they differ from the Occident in the relationship they have established with nature. She combines also fight against climate change with her feminism by analysing the relationships between humans and the natural world. Her activism promoting solidarity was rewarded with the Right Livelihood Award, which honors those offering practical and exemplary answers to the most urgent challenges facing us today.

Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1940, Eduardo Galeano is a journalist and writer who combines fiction, history, and political analysis in his texts. He has lived in exile for the better part of his life as an opponent to the Uruguayan Dictatorship and the military dictatorship in Argentina. Returned to Montevideo in 1985, where to this day he still lives and writes. For Eduardo Galeano, life is the relation between wanting and power, between what exists and what we believe exists, between our fantasy and our actual circumstances. He highlights the systems of power that govern our world, such as colonialism, imperialism exploitation, racism or even misogyny. Through his humanistic and poetic look, Galeano understands reality as something much richer and more diverse than the way we sometimes see it, limited as we are by a value system that restricts our comprehension and our readiness to view the unknown as an opportunity, rather than a threat. Galeano proposes to reconstruct our memory, to listen to words never heard before and to see the world with different eyes, uniting that which is separate. His great fear is that humanity is suffering from amnesia, a reason for him to keep writing to prevent the memory of the human rainbow from being erased.
Some of his most famous paintings are "The Millinery Shop" (1884-1890), "A Cotton Office in New Orleans" (1873), "The Star" (1878), "Place de la Concorde" (1875), "After the bath, woman drying herself" (1895), "Ballet Rehearsal on Stage" (1874), "Interior" (1869), "The Bellelli Family" (1867), "The Dance Class" (1871-1874), "The Green Dancer" (1879), "Two Dancers in Yellow and Pink" (1910), "Self Portrait" (1885), "The Tub" (1886), "A Woman Ironing" (1884), "Portrait of Mary Cassatt" (1884), "Blue Dancers" (1899), "Two Dancers on Stage" (1877), "The Dancing Class" (1874), "The Dance Foyer at the Opera on the rue Le Peletier" (1872), "Woman combing her hair" (1885), "Orchestra Musicians" (1872) and "The Absinthe Drinker" (1876).

How did an unassuming housepainter from Italy pull off “the greatest little known art heist in modern time?” Was his motivation more than money? Writer-director Joe Medeiros traces the path of Vincenzo Peruggia, charged with the 1911 theft of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa from The Louvre, and finds the story of a daughter mourning the father she never knew and a country recovering from old wounds. Combining historical photographs, animation and interviews with Peruggia’s descendants, Medeiros answers why and how the man called “Macaroni” by his French co-workers absconded with and kept the legendary painting for two years. This riveting, often humorous documentary portrays a man struggling to find his way in the world and make his family proud. Most touching are the scenes of Peruggia’s 84-year-old daughter, Celestina, who grew up on stories about her father and longed for the truth.

For centuries, sandstone as a historical building material has shaped the image of Dresden, the capital of Saxony. The magnificent baroque buildings - the Frauenkirche, the Semper Opera House and the Zwinger - are all made of Elbe sandstone. After the city was completely destroyed in the Second World War, it is now almost resplendent again after decades of reconstruction. No easy undertaking: The reconstruction of the historic loop ribbed vault in the Residence Palace was previously considered impossible by builders from all over Europe. But in the end, the experts succeeded with the help of old building plans.

Studios - How they shaped the film industry and became one of the Big Five studioswocomoCULTURE2022-07-08 | The Warner Brother's career is a true "rags to riches" story. They sensed pretty early that there was more money to be made with movies than with their paternal shop in Youngtown, Ohio. When Sam Warner saw the Edison Kinetoscope for the first time, he saw the future and bought a projector which came with one print, the old classic western "The Great Train Robbery". In 1912, Jack and Sam set out to produce movies in California. Their first big hit was "My Four Years in Germany" in 1918 and subsequently began to buy up cinemas to show their films and distribute those of others. Warner Features Co. was founded in 1913 and pretty soon evolved into Warner Brothers Studios and First National Pictures which was founded in 1923 by the four Warner Brothers Harry, Albert, Sam and Jack.
The Warner Brothers produced among other things movies like "42nd Street" with Busby Berkeley, "Confessions of a Nazi Spy", "A Street Car Names Desire", "East of Eden", "Rebel Without A Cause" and "My Fair Lady" with Audrey Hepburn. In the late 60's the anti-hero emerged, and actors like Steve McQueen in "Bullitt" or Paul Newman in "Cool Hand Luke" were prominent at the studio. Clint Eastwood also became a typical Warner Star with films like "Dirty Harry". Nowadays, franchises like "Superman", "Batman" or "Harry Potter" guarantee Warner Brothers success. Bugs Bunny, a cartoon character that was created by Tex Avery as part of the show "Looney Tunes", is the company's official mascot.
Carole Lombard became famous in the 1930s, mostly for her roles in so-called screwball comedies. In 1931 she married her film partner William Powell, with whom she appeared in "Man of the World" and "Ladies' Man". The marriage was short-lived, however. In 1932 she met Clark Gable in "No Man of Her Own". Most notably with the films "Twentieth Century", "Hands Across the Table" and "The Princess Comes Across". For her role in the film "My Man Godfrey" she received her first and only Oscar nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role in 1937. The actress had a long-lasting friendship with the director Alfred Hitchcock and his wife Alma. In 1942, Lombard died in the crash of the TWA Flight 3.
Gable and Lombard married in 1939. Gable was badly shaken by the death of his wife. Although he later married again, he was buried next to Lombard at his request in 1960.

David Beck is a master sculptor, carver, and miniature architect. His delightful mixed-media constructions blend sophistication with the unexpected. He is a largely undiscovered genius who is unknown to the larger public, only a selected group of collectors and curators are familiar with his work. He works in a fantastical genre all his own, combines modern, popular, and classical influences, and manages to create intricate worlds with detailed, often humorous scenes that are rendered on a tiny scale.
Robert Taylor made more than 70 feature films during his career. He made his film debut in "A Wicked Woman" and landed his first major role in 1935 in the film "Society Doctor". In the same year he starred alongside Irene Dunne in the film version of "Magnificent Obsession". He owed his popularity to appearances alongside Loretta Young ("Private Numbers"), Janet Gaynor ("Small Town Girl"), Joan Crawford ("The Gorgeous Hussy") and especially Greta Garbo ("The Lady of the Camellias").
Stanwyck and Taylor met when they shot the film "His Brother's Wife" together and were married from 1939 to 1951. The marriage remained childless.

Hughes explores the world of Goya and gives a very personal commentary on his paintings, charting his achievements as a court painter, satirist and war reporter and finally as the topographer of the inner self, of madness, fear and despair. He gives an insight into the huge changes that took place in Goya’s work in the course of his life: the shift from light to dark. In Spain, he travels to Goya’s native Aragon and, in Madrid, he is seen visiting the galleries, palaces and churches where Goya’s works are on display. The painter’s unforgettable images dominate the screen, many viewed in the superb, close-up detail that can only be afforded by the camera. Footage of the Prado’s 2002 exhibition of Goya’s paintings of women shows the enormous range of his depiction of the opposite sex. Specially-shot film of a bullfight in the ring at Rhonda is juxtaposed with etchings from the Tauromaquia series. Something of the painter’s milieu is alive today in this ancient spectacle. In New York, Hughes calls on the American painter Leon Golub, who shares his fascination for Goya, and elicits a contemporary artist’s perspective on the Spanish master’s work.
Some of his most famous paintings are "The Nude Maja", "The Clothed Maja", "Charles IV of Spain and His Family", "The Third of May", "The Parasol", "The Dog", "The Disasters of War Series", "The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters", "Saturn Devouring His Son" and "Witches' Sabbath (The Great He-Goat)".
William Powell started his career as an actor in silent films. From 1930 to 1932, Powell formed together with Kay Francis a screen couple in six films, and between 1934 and 1947 he even appeared in 14 movies alongside Myrna Loy. He is best-known for his role as detective Nick Charles in the movie series "The Thin Man". He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor three times: "The Thin Man" (1934), "My Man Godfrey" (1936), and "Life with Father" (1947).
Harlow and Powell appeared together in two films "Reckless" (1935) and "Libeled Lady" (1936). Even though he was 19 years older than she was, Harlow called Powell the love of her life.

Astonished by his movies, actress Ingrid Bergman wrote Rossellini a letter asking to work with him. When the two met in Paris, they immediately fell in love with each other and started an affair which caused a huge scandal when Berman moved to Europe. She left behind her husband and daughter as well as her Hollywood career for Roberto Rossellini. Even though she became pregnant after she moved to Europe, she was still starring in the movie "Stromboli".
Bergman had already appeared on the screen in films by Swedish director Gustaf Molander. She had her breakthrough in Hollywood with her role in "Intermezzo: A Love Story". David O. Selznick had seen her in Molander's film and brought the actress to Hollywood for the remake under his direction. Warner then cast her with Humphrey Bogart in "Casablanca", in "For Whom the Bell Tolls" and "The House of Lady Alquist", for which she won her first Oscar.
Rossellini turned out to be a big egomaniac and possessive partner. Bergman was now supposed to work only for him. When the French director Jean Renoir invited her to appear in "Elena and Her Men", she fled to Paris. Rossellini and Bergman broke up and she returned to Hollywood where she presented the Oscars with great applause and soon received another one herself for her role in "Anastasia". She continued her career also in Sweden, where she starred in Ingmar Berman's "Autumn Sonata".

While Judy Garland wanted to escape the pressure of the studio and was looking for a new promoter, Vincente Minnelli, on the other hand, was looking for a new muse. The initial father-daughter relationship changed into a love affair and the two married in 1945. In 1946, their daughter Liza Minnelli was born.
Together they realised the musical "Broadway Melody" ("Ziegfeld Follies") and were subsequently called the "royal family of musical comedy in Hollywood". However, when Judy discovered that Vincente was having an affair with the family chauffeur, their relationship ended. Nevertheless, they remained lifelong friends.
In his documentary from the series "Iconic Couples", Bertrand Tessier follows the most important stages in the lives of the two actors and shows how they inspired each other in their work. With the Great Depression and evaporating income cinema attendance fell drastically, to counter this trend Hollywood became more and more violent and sexy, to a point that a call for censorship of some kind was in the air. Indeed the better organized catholic minority created the Catholic Legion of Decency and the clergy admonished their Sunday church goers to boycott certain cinemas and films. Hollywood became to be viewed as a place of the damned and sinful.

Director Howard Hawks cast him that year for his feature film "To Have and Not to Have" (after the novel by Ernest Hemingway).
