Michelangelo Caravaggio's early pictures were usually small pictures of non-dramatic subjects, with half-length figures, a preponderance of still-life details (which Caravaggio painted superbly), and a frankly homo-erotic character.

Michelangelo Caravaggio painted "Young Lute Player" around 1596 at the age of 25. A contemporary reports that Caravaggio once described this painting as his most beautiful. The Lute Player is a boy. Caravaggio's early paintings show a strong preference for these casually beautiful creatures who inhabit a borderline area between the two sexes.
