James Riddle "Jimmy" Hoffa was the president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Under his leadership, the Teamsters became the largest and one of the most powerful labour unions in the United States. To many Teamsters, he was their beloved leader who fought for higher pay and better working conditions. To others, like Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, Hoffa was a criminal tied to the American Mafia that had allowed it to exert its influence over the Teamsters.
After his release from imprisonment in 1971, he was snubbed as leader of the Teamsters in favour of the more malleable Frank Fitzsimmons. Undaunted, Hoffa persisted in trying to regain his presidency until the fateful night of 30 July 1975, when he disappeared without a trace. As befits his middle name, Hoffa's disappearance remains unsolved to this day.
Note that this program was made in 1993. In an April 2019 interview with DJ Vlad, the former Colombo crime family capo Michael Franzese stated that he was certain Hoffa's disappearance to be mob related, that he was aware of the location of Hoffa's body and his shooter, and had tapes that reveal details of his disappearance. Franzese said, "I can tell you that it's wet, that's for sure," and "Upon good information, again, I think I know who the real shooter was; still alive today, in prison." Whether he's telling the truth remains to be seen.
