In 1943, German forces in occupied Poland found a mass grave in the Katyn forest containing Polish ex-military officers. The Germans claimed the men had been killed while the area was occupied by the Soviets in 1940, while the Soviets in turn claimed the Germans had killed them when they invaded Soviet territory in 1941. It would take another 50 years and the fall of the Soviet Union for the truth to come out: the tens of thousands of dead Poles found at Katyn were but a small drop in the ocean of blood created by the brutality of Stalin and his repressive Soviet regime.
