Folklore, tall tales, myths and monsters have influenced cinema since pictures first turned into movies. But ancient lore doesn't just terrorize, it moralizes as well. A good folk tale can give us meaning, structure, and a common language, but when films take on these old stories, they often update the original message to suit their needs. So, let's take a look around the world at cinema's deadliest folk tales and what they're trying to tell us about ourselves.

Folk tales take the shape of almost any sort of lesson. There are good old fashioned cautionary tales about the danger of man's creative instincts. You can draw a straight line from old stories like Frankenstein to more modern takes on A.I. like The Terminator. Some of the oldest and deadliest folklore deals with love and sex that can be seen in films like The White Reindeer all the way up to It Follows and play heavily in bonkers Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale adaptations like The Lure while horror movies like Candyman have always leaned on urban legends and myths to create truly terrifying alchemy on screen.

This episode was written by Felice Wu and edited by Clint Gage and Casey Redmon.
